10 Midi: Thursday January 29th

Unfortunately I will not be in class today.  Below is what you should be working on for the class:

Task #1:

  • Go to the "Grade 10" tab
  • Scroll down until you get to F+ and G+ chord scales.
  • Open the file (or control-click to save to your desktop).
  • Practice play the two chord scales (you have already learned F+ for the Marry You Lift).
If you are someone that has experience playing piano, please offer your assistance to other students in the class.

Task #2

  • Change the key to G+.
  • Practice making different 4 and 8 bar chord progressions.  Here are some tips:
    • Start on I (most pieces of music do)
    • Next choose weaker chords (minor - ii, iii, vi)
    • End with strong chords (major - I, IV, V)

Task #3

Our next assignment is the 12-bar blues.  This style of song has a very specific chord pattern.  On the progression maker page, shorten the chord area to 4 bars, then add two more 4 bar sections using the "+" sign.

Create the following 12-bar pattern (one chord per bar).  After listening to it, open GarageBand and try to play the pattern yourself.

CYOA Structure Example

Below is an example of how you could structure your CYOA assignment.  The lighter colours in the same track mean that there is different information (for example, a different chord progression in the choruses) but the instrument stayed the same.  This is by no means what you have to do, but if you are feeling stuck, take a look at this for some ideas.

Ms. Lintott's 10 Midi Class

On Thursday I will begin doing checkpoints with you (not for marks) to make sure you are all on the right track. Below are a list of reminders for your assignment as well as a screen shot to give you an idea how your song should be laid out.

"Background Horns" are an added option, and not mandatory for the assignment.

Note: in my example, you'll see the solo section has no chords.  That is because I decided to have my piano instrument play the solo and therefore would not also be able to play the chords.  This also creates contrast in the song.

Your Drums Should Have: bass drum, snare, high hat and ride cymbal.

How to Make A Basic Introduction: NEW!
1. Copy the last FOUR bars of your 12-bar blues minus the melody.
2. Put those FOUR bars at the beginning of your assignment.
3. Optional: add a drum fill leading into the "head"

How to Make A Basic Ending: NEW!
1. Copy the last FOUR bars of your 12-bar blues including the melody.
2. Put those FOUR bars at the end of your assignment.
3. Change the bass line in the last two bars to only be notes G, B or D.  Remember only one note at a time in the bassline!
4. Optional:
       - In the melody, change the octave of the final note ("G") up or down one.
       - Add a drum fill at the end

Melody Writing Tips
1. Must have a "pick-up" note or notes before the Head enters.
2. Must only use the blues scale (G, Bb, C, C#, D, F).
3. Most Head melodies use a lot of stepwise motion (not a lot of big leaps).
4. The melody should be split up into THREE four bar chunks.
5. The first two chunks should have a nearly identical melody.
6. Your final chunk should be different but complimentary to the first two chunks.
7.  Look at the notes that are being played in the chords for ideas of what notes will sound "good".

An Example: If a G chord (notes G, B, D) is being played, then choosing a G or D would be great.   But having a really long Bb in that bar will sound awful next to the B natural in the chord.

Suggestions on How to Make Your Solo Section Interesting:
1. Change the texture of the song (remove some instruments)
2. Change instruments for your melody.
3. Add little drum fills (often done on the snare in blues or jazz).

CYOA

When handing in the CYOA assignment, create a file folder with your name in project final copies.  In the folder there must be THREE files:

- the proposal document
- the garageband file
- an exported (.m4a) version of your assignment

The lab will be open Tuesday and Wednesday of this week until 5pm.

Grade 10 Midi: CYOA Assignment Reminders

Hi everyone,

While I'm away Tuesday, please continue to work on your CYOA assignments.

For all my classes, by the end of the week you should have your chords, bassline and drums recorded - and have started the process of creating a melody.

Remember:

- Your bass should be playing the same note as your left hand in the chords

- Go to www.onlinedrummer.com to get ideas on creating a drum beat.  Also, the easiest way to switch up your drums when going to the verse to the chorus is to move from playing the high hat to the ride cymbal.

Keep looking back to your proposal sheet to make sure you are recording your chords properly.

Good luck and come by Wednesday after school if you have any questions!

Miss Lintott.

Hey Midiots! Wear pink on Wednesday!

Like we've talked about in grade 10 midi, youth have the strongest impact and influence on the entertainment and social media industry.  Check out the how some Canadian high school students used this power and made something develop into an international event.  On Wednesday -  wear pink!

"The International Day of Pink is a day of action, born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination, bullying and homophobia."

Miss Lintott's Classes - Monday March 28th, 2011

.
Hi Everyone,

While I'm away sick today, please continue working on your 12 bar blues assignment, and focus mainly on the first twelve bars.  If you have a permission form and money for the Scratch Lab trip, please give it to Mr. Pinhorn. Continue to practice your F+ chords as you will be tested next week.  If you did not get a sheet they are up at the front on the ledge.  See you on Wednesday.

For the 12-Bar Blues Assignment, record:
- chords
- walking bassline
- jazz style drums (swing eighth notes)
- blues melody (with lyrics!)

Your blues melody should be simple and repetitive.  As a general rule, use one note (rhythmically) per syllable of a word.  Write your lyrics FIRST, then write a melody to work with the lyrics.  Check out the examples listed on the assignment on YouTube for some inspiration.

Write your blues lyrics on a word document to be submitted with the final assignment.

Midi Trip - Wednesday, April 13th

On Wednesday April 13th we will be going to the Scratch Lab Dj Institute for a day of learning how to DJ!  This trip is open to all Midi students (grades 10-12) and costs only $33.  There are only 24 spots so get your permission form and money in quick!

For more information, check out the Scratch Lab website HERE.  Make sure to look up the media section and watch some of the videos on what the ScratchLab is really like.

Grade 10 Songwriter Reminders

As you are handing in your assignment can you please double check that you have done the following so that you do not lose marks for silly errors.

Check that:

  1. EVERYTHING is quantized (aligned)
  2. The metronome is turned off.
  3. The purple end marker is set to 1 bar after your song ends.
  4. You have selected a master track effect.

Grade 11 Slideshow Drafts due this Friday!

By this Friday, November 26, 2010 all Grade 11 MIDI students should do the following:

• in iMovie use the share menu to create a FULL QUALITY of your movie without music.
• rename the file with your name and initials in the title.
• drop the resulting movie into the Grade 11 TO BE MARKED folder in your appropriate section.

You will receive feedback on:
• how well your topic is presented: does your audience know the point?
• your use of text, effects and transitions to compliment your slideshow; is it readable, how is the pacing?
• how you can use the media to present your topic more effectively; how can I take the next step?

Put Titles In Your Slideshows!

Grade 11 students are reminded to preview their slideshow for someone who does not know your TOPIC, OPINION or STORY.  If they cannot tell you exactly what your pictures mean, you must add TITLES, TRANSITIONS and EFFECTS to the pictures to make your meaning more clear.  Do not expect your audience to "infer" anything, be completely OBVIOUS. mrp

Q107's Top 107 Classic Rock Songs Of All Time

If you were thinking about checking out some older bands from the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, this list is a great place to start.
